Reading Incentives for 2025: Reading Dragons and Rubber Ducky Club!

Reading Dragons (recommended ages 3+)

This summer, start off Summer Reading by picking up a tracker and a pack of 3 starter cards at the Children's Room desk. Collect more dragons by reading, including eight exclusive dragons that are only available this summer! Show off your dragons and perhaps even compete in a tournament at our block party in August!

Read on for instructions for how to play two games with your dragons. Find a printer-friendly version here.

Rock Paper Scissors:

To play, you and a friend each choose one card secretly, keeping it hidden so your friend can't see what you chose. Then count to 3 and both of you flip over your cards to see who wins.

  • Fire beats Leaf
  • Leaf beats Water
  • Water beats Fire

If you have the same color you tie.

Rock Paper Scissors, War!

Play this when you have several dragon cards. Make sure you write your name on your cards so you can get your cards back at the end of the game.

  • Mix up both players’ cards and divide them evenly between both players.
  • Place your stack of cards face down on the table. Do not look at the cards.
  • Both players draw the top card on their deck and flip it over at the same time.
    • Fire beats Leaf
    • Leaf beats Water
    • Water beats Fire
  • If you have the same color, the oldest creature wins.
  • If your creatures are the same color and age, then you go to war.
  • To go to war, add two face down cards to a win pile, then play one more card face up.
  • If you tie again, go to war until there is a winner.
  • The winner adds both cards, plus any in the win pile, to their own win pile.
  • Play until you run out of cards.
  • The player with the most cards in their win pile wins.

Trying to keep track of which dragons you've already collected? Stop by for a checklist (it'll fit right inside your tracker!) or download it to print at home.

Rubber Ducky Club (recommended ages 0-3)

Our littlest “readers” are invited to join the Rubber Ducky Club. Read, sing, and play with your little one to earn rubber duckies and free books!

In case you need another reason to participate...

Summer Reading has all kinds of great benefits. Kids are incentivized to read for fun, explore new genres, and keep up their literacy skills even while school is out. For babies and pre-readers, it is essential that caregivers start reading aloud early and often to establish a strong foundation for their child's future literacy. Check out the American Library Association's page on Summer Reading Benefits for more information.
