Nicholas Langhart to Retire from Forbush Memorial Library

Westminster, MA, 9/10/24 –After 13 years working devotedly as the Library Director for Forbush Memorial Library, Nicholas Langhart, a resident of Westminster is set to retire on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Nick, 80, joined Forbush after fifty years’ experience in library and museum administration; 25 in library directorships. During his time here in Westminster he was responsible for righting the ship at Forbush Library following a tumultuous time of leadership. Nick carefully oversaw restoration of historic artwork and acquisition of noteworthy gifts to the library art collection, managed building renovations and a landscape improvement plan, guided the staff and Westminster library community through Covid restrictions, and, with George Lane, Kevin Hart, Jeffrey Aubuchon and others, coordinates the very popular Great Decisions program at Forbush through the Foreign Policy Association. His tenure saw many improvements in the building, grounds, technology, policy revision, and library services. The Board of Trustees is very grateful for his earnest stewardship of the library, its collections, and for his leadership of the staff of 11 employees.

He earned a Master’s degree at Cornell University in Historic Preservation and previously held the position of Property Manager for the Society of the Preservation of New England Antiquities (Historic New England). He was previously Library Director at the Boylston Public Library and currently teaches courses and leads architectural tours at Fitchburg State as part of the ALFA program and also teaches docent classes for Preservation Worcester. He has taught the history of Worcester’s architecture, the evolution of New England architecture and American decorative arts at Clark University and Worcester State University. He is a member of the Westminster Historical Commission and serves as treasurer of the Steamship Historical Society of America, Inc.

"My time in Westminster has been rewarding, serving in a library loved by so many. The staff has been the very best. I'm grateful for their service! I envision a bright future for Forbush under fresh leadership."

A farewell Open House will be held at 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Forbush Memorial Library in the Kendig Room. All friends, coworkers and well-wishers are welcome and encouraged to attend. A short speaking program will take place at 6:00 pm.
